Usually when I take photographs I pay a lot of attention to vertical and horizontal alignment as I tend to take the photos slightly skewed in one direction. If I am not careful I need to correct the verticals in post processing, which takes time. At times, however, like in this photograph having a tilted horizon emphasises the point of view. The man in the centre of the photograph was reclining against one of these small metal poles, which are everywhere in Sydney. Taking the photo on an angle in this case was deliberate to show this, otherwise the lens tends to flatten out scenes like that.
Cola head
by Ted Szukalski |Yesterday temperatures in Sydney reached 40C plus. Previews few days were also very hot. Outside of trying to stay in the shade to avoid direct sunlight hydration is also very important during hot days like that. As you can see from the photograph here some people were a bit more creative than other on how to stay hydrated. This young man has a cola can attached to his cap with a tube extending to his mouth. I am not sure if keeping your cola where it is most likely to get warmed up is the best spot, but at least it makes for a new street photograph.
Spiral fountain at Darling Harbour
by Ted Szukalski |
I think almost every visitor to Sydney spends some time at Darling Harbour and they have kids they always stop by the spiral fountain. Kids just love playing there and getting a bit wet, especially on hot summer day.
For me as a photographer this is an endless supply of abstracts. Different light conditions expose various patterns in watter of the little steps, or you can concentrate of water surfaces. Today I have noticed wind was creating lines in water at an angle to the steps of the fountain.
Old fashioned letter
by Ted Szukalski |
I write a lot of letters. Having friends all over the world means e-mail is an easy way for us to communicate. I guess most people have almost forgotten what it is like to use old fashioned postal letters. You know the one hand written on white paper, in nice envelope and a colourful stamp. The one the other person will wait for a week or two to receive if they live somewhere in Europe or USA. And yet some people still do write letter like that. This older lady is one of them. She was sitting on a bench in Sydney’s Martin place and was writing a letter.
When was the last time you wrote a letter with a pen?
Is this man thinking worrying or is he just asleep?
by Ted Szukalski |
Today, again was a very hot day in Sydney. I opted for a short walk through Martin Place. I was about to turn around and find a shady path to the office when I spotted this older man sitting at one of the stair openings of Sydney Post Office building. It was hard to see if he was asleep, was he just deep in thoughts or perhaps he was worrying about something. I took a quick photograph and walked away.
