This simple photograph of an Asian girl with a mirror fixing her face in a public is a small symbol of a growing trend. I see a lot of activity, which in my opinion belongs to a bathroom occurring in public. Women cutting, cleaning and polishing their nails on trains, applying makeup (this is also dangerous when they do it in traffic, in “privacy” of their cars). Applying hairspray and deodorant in public. The list goes on. When has all of this become acceptable behaviour? Are we as a society so short on time we have to use any time and any place to do things like toiletries outside of our homes? I think not, but obviously many people make it their routine.
Scary story
by Ted Szukalski |Judging from the face of the girl in the middle the story the young man was telling his companions was rather scary or at least unbelivelably surprising. I photographed this group at one of the remaining Starbucks Cafes. Normally I avoid the place as it attracts a lot of smokers but it also has some interesting people from time to time.
In passing
by Ted Szukalski |This photograph of a girl giving a passing man a critical look is far from good in technical terms. There is motion blur as I have taken it without stopping and the light is challenging ranging from a remote bright spots to almost black holes in the building on the left. However, her expression here is priceless and I only wish I had some miracle mirror camera to see his face.
Man in bloom
by Ted Szukalski |This is perhaps one of more colourful photographs I have taken for a while. This Asian man’s act was quite unremarkable. He stood on a plastic crate and simply roted hoopla-hoop for a while. I have passed him and only when I was going back 10 minutes later his face drew my attention. I am not sure what motivation was behind his costume but the blooming flowers contrasted strongly with his facial expressions, which were more reminiscent of a scary clown from a circus then those of a man appreciating the beautiful blooms. Also at this stage the position of hoopla-hoop seems to be means of some unnatural propulsion but that is just an odd angle of his body creating this illusion.
Pigeon Queen
by Ted Szukalski |This photograph, which I have titled the “Pigeon Queen” is one of all time favourites of mine. The older woman surrounded by the pigeons. They were crowding around her, sitting on her hands and coming close to her head as if in an attempt of a thank you kiss. I am sure these sky rats were fed very well by the lady and all that affection had a very down to earth reasons in shape of bread crumbs. There are a lot of dynamic elements here created by the pigeons, with the main focus in shape of the bird with folded forward wings just about to land in front of the woman’s face. And then, there is her look. No, she is not looking at me. She has her gaze firmly set on the bird sitting on her arm. Quite a special scene – fairytale like.
