Fishermen

Fisherman - The look

On my recent outing to Avoca Beach I came across a group of interesting dressed fisherman. Unlike most people there who simply fished in their tongs and t-shirts this group was dressed head to toe in protective gear. I’ve approached them and asked them if I could take a photo. While I was doing that a big wave hit the rocks and carried one of the t-shirt clad fisherman about 10 meters on his back on the rocks. Now I could easily understand why these seasoned anglers were wearing so much gear. The fishermen were originally from Philippines who now call Australia home. Jokingly they said “We don’t like fishing but we are here every day”. As you can see in the photo gallery they have had some success with their angling.

It is without a doubt a major surfing beach. If you intend to surf at the northern end make sure you have the right skills as it is considered to be for the more experienced. Avoca has a well known surf lifesaving club.

Lifesaver

Avoca-Beach-Lifesaver-IMG_20070211_6684.jpg

The figure of a NSW lifesaver is and should be well known to everybody. The familiar caps and yellow shirts are a symbol of safety and enjoyment for so many beach goers. This particular photograph was taken at Avoca Beach where the surf can be challenging at the best and outright dangerous very often. The watchful eye of this female lifesaver was directed towards a group of young surfers.

For these unfamiliar with the Australian Lifesavers it is essential to mention they are volunteers.
