This years fireworks at the Australia Day were one of the most spectacular and colourful I have ever seen. For many this is the pinnacle and reason why they come in their thousands to Sydney’s Darling Harbour. Locals and tourists alike stood there in awe admiring the kaleidoscope of the best pyrotechnic displays in the world. The cacophony of sound and light was simply fantastic.

I have captured a lot of scenes big and small from this year’s celebrations. Visit my Australia Day photographic gallery here to see the remaining photographs.

Darling Harbour usually has a busker or two trying to make living by entertaining crowds. For me the “man of the day” award goes to this “clown” who made a large group of kids and adults laugh with no end. His act was to immerse himself inside a giant red balloon and show his body parts with various dressings - like in this case chicken head. Perhaps he will help to unravel the ages old dilemma “was the chicken or the egg first?”

Mounted police were present at the celebrations of Australia Day 2008 at Darling Harbour. The unit drew attention not because of the protection they provided but because the kids loved the horses and photographers (and most male participants) liked the gorgeous women the NSW police selected to represent them on the day.

I was lucky enough to draw attention of one of the friendly mounted police woman. Did I say they were pretty - this girl could become a photographic model any time?

There are few more vivid symbolic images of this nation during the Australia Day attesting to the anthems words “For we are young and free” then kids in the national colours. The traditional flag transfer on the chick, a flag wrapped around the shoulders and depending on the year another paraphernalia sold by the multitude of stalls.
